The North Channel and Georgian Bay

Getting to the North Channel from Milwaukee is about 80 hours' sailing time to reach Blind River (my planned customs registration site).  Even though I didn't make it all the way, I did knock on the door.  And the daily segments were a great journey.  I created an interactive Google Map with segments I took (or would take in the future) with some notes on the segment and comments on each destination.

Each of these segments is calculated by Navionics Auto route function, assuming a cruising speed of 5 knots.

When you enter the map, there will be a panel on the left side.  Just click on this map image, and select "North Channel Sailing Routes for a bit of trip planning.  Then click on a segment to see its length and duration,  with a little comment on the destination as well.  I'll use this map myself to plan my next trip.

The North Channel is considered one of the finest freshwater cruising grounds in the world. Pristine waters, countless islands, hidden anchorages, remote ports of call and a big sky all make this a cruising sailor's delight.

The North Channel extends from the St. Mary's River in the west to Georgian Bay on the east and runs between the mainland of Ontario and Manitoulin Island - the largest freshwater island in the world. Its breathtaking beauty has been a magnet for sailors for decades.

Here are some facts about this stunningly beautiful cruising area:

  • length: 115mi / 185km / 100nm
  • width: .5-20mi / 1-32km / .4-17nm
  • depth: 30 ft / 9m
  • surface: 3,000sq mi / 7,770sq km

Baie Fine

Baie Fine is one of the largest freshwater fjords in the world. This tear in the earth's surface is about 9 nm long and offers breathtaking scenery as you cruise deeper into it.

Bair Fine is bounded by high quartz mountains that gleam in the sunshine. There are numerous anchorages scattered along its length. There are anchorages which are quite popular and which can be busy. But, there are others that offer delightful solitude.
