Remember back when I was telling you about sailing into Petosky (Blog entry 28.08.20 A short day) where I mentioned that my uncles would tell me as a little boy, that I had to have Sisu? From that you might think I named my sailboat Sisu, so that finally I could "have Sisu".
When I first bought her, the boat's name was Sabrina. Not a potent name, but I had no objections. Not until the first time I sailed her. You see, I bought her on the other side of Lake Michigan, and needed to get her home.
I convinced a couple friends who were experienced sailors to help. It was a pleasant October weekend, and my friends took the ferry across. We boarded "Sabrina" late in the afternoon, knowing we would sail through the night and arrive in Milwaukee sometime after sunrise.
Long story, short (and there is a good long story, that each of the four sailing friends has told many times - including re-telling to each other) - we hit a big storm.
Things went wrong. Some things broke (you know, like the rudder? Jib sheets? Lazy jacks came down, and we lost the topping lift). A couple of us had to leave the safety of the cockpit and make repairs in very heavy winds and waves. Oh, it was truly a dark and stormy night.
But Sabrina got us home, even though she was injured and limping. It was after that experience, that I decided she needed a stronger name, and only one came to my mind.
By now, she has taken me back across the lake several times, and up to the top of the lake and back as well. Often it is just me and Sisu, but sometimes we take friends, too.
I grew up with the concept of Sisu, but I would like to add one idea from my boat, that does not always find its way into the Finn's elaboration of the idea.
Sailing Vessel Sisu gives me the chance to enjoy audacious adventure. I believe the Finns would not mind adding "audacious anventure" to what they mean when they say "Sisu".
